The rhythm of paddling a canoe slows you down and you can experience the peace and beauty of lakes, rivers and parts of the countryside only accessible from the water. Canoes can blend harmoniously into their surroundings, offering paddlers the opportunity to view wildlife in its natural habitat. Paddling a canoe with two people is very straightforward and doesn't require great strength or fitness, although it is more demanding if you paddle solo or in rough or fast flowing water. Open canoes are particularly suited to exploration or touring, from day trips to longer canoe camping breaks. One advantage of canoe camping is that you don't have to carry your equipment and provisions on your back. To start you could contact a local club, take a canoe out for a day or sign up for a guided trip or tour. Alternatively, if whitewater is more your sort of thing, you could try rafting or kayaking.
