Making a Good Impression
Written by Catherine Davis

Most of what it takes to make a good impression is common sense, but a little extra thought and preparation can help to influence the way others see us in both our social and professional lives.

When we meet people for the first time the impression they form of us is often made instinctively and very quickly, based on how we look, sound, smell and feel. And once made it can be difficult to shift.

Personal presentation is key. Make sure you're clean, tidy, well groomed and suitably dressed. Looking the part will help you feel the part, which may in turn increase your confidence.

Be aware of your body language, and use your posture to project a strong, positive attitude. Stand tall, make eye contact and give a firm handshake. Remember there's nothing like a smile to create a good first impression – so long as you don't overdo it (especially if you don't have a particularly strong or natural smile) !

Speak clearly in a way that conveys energy and enthusiasm. Inform yourself about the other person so that you can ask appropriate questions. Focusing on them rather than you can also help to calm nerves.

Finally, the importance of good manners goes without saying; being courteous, polite and attentive are all crucial to making and maintaining a good impression.
