Reiki is a Japanese word that translates as 'universal life energy'. A form of alternative medicine, Reiki is based on the idea that there is a spiritual force that can stimulate natural healing processes and help restore balance to one's life.
As a holistic therapy, Reiki claims to treat the whole person rather than specific symptoms; the Reiki practitioner is the channel through which energy flows to the needs of the person on a physical, mental or emotional level.
Reiki treatment is administered by the laying on of hands, which can be a relaxing experience that brings about an enhanced sense of peace and well being.
Whilst Reiki is not a religion, it presents a set of ideals, the purpose of which is to help the individual realise that self improvement is part of the healing process. To this end, Dr. Usui, the founder of Reiki, developed the following guidelines for gracious, virtuous and healthy living:
The secret art of inviting happiness
The miraculous medicine of all diseases
Just for today, do not anger
Do not worry and be filled with gratitude
Devote yourself to your work. Be kind to people.
Every morning and evening, join your hands in prayer.
Pray these words to your heart and chant these words with your mouth

The effectiveness of Reiki is similar to that of other unproven complementary medicines. It can be used to support orthodox forms of treatment.
