Acupuncture
Written by Catherine Davis

AcupunctureA branch of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture involves inserting very fine needles into the skin at specific points in order to regulate the flow of energy in the body and restore it to a state of balance and good health.

Acupuncture stimulates the immune system and the release of hormones to help the body respond to injury or stress. While it can be employed for a variety of medical conditions, acupuncture is best known for treating muscle, joint and dental pain, headaches and migraine. Acupuncture has no side effects and can be used in conjunction with conventional medicine.

During the initial consultation, the acupuncturist may take details of medical and family history as well as symptoms, so as to get a complete picture. For diagnostic purposes, they will also take your pulse and examine your tongue.

The acupuncture needles are tapped gently into the skin. As they are manipulated, you might experience some heaviness or tingling. They may then be removed, or stay in place for up to thirty minutes. Acupuncture treatments usually last for about an hour.
