Stand Up Comedy
Written by Catherine Davis

Performing stand up comedy can be a real buzz that takes you way outside your comfort zone. As well as being funny, you'll need confidence and nerve.

To begin with, it's useful to study the humour, delivery and timing of professional comics. Ultimately however, doing stand up comedy involves developing a stage persona based on your own character and a routine derived from your individual experiences and insights.

Attending a course or workshop at a local comedy club or community theatre can help you turn your material into jokes and structure your act. You might also consider a drama class in improvisation, which is a good way of learning how to think on your feet, respond to different audiences and deal with hecklers.

Once you feel ready to take to the stage, check out bars, night clubs and coffee shops in your area as well as local comedy clubs. Many such venues have open mic or amateur nights where new stand up comedians are given short 3 -5 minute slots to try out their material.
