Bog Snorkelling
Written by Catherine Davis

If you enjoy a bit of a challenge and splashing about in mud, then take the plunge and go bog snorkelling.

Now an International sporting event, bog snorkelling attracts competitors from as far afield as Russia, Australia and New Zealand. The world bog snorkelling championships are held annually on August Bank Holiday Monday in Llanwrtyd Wells, Powys, mid Wales, which is the smallest town in Britain.

Bog snorkelling participants have to complete two lengths of a 60 yard (55m), trench cut through a peat bog in the shortest possible time, wearing a snorkel and flippers and without using conventional swimming strokes. Wet suits are optional, as is fancy dress!

There are categories for men, women and juniors, and the current bog snorkelling world record is a time of 1 minute, 35 seconds.

Related sports include mountain bike bog snorkelling, which involves cycling the same length of bog underwater using a snorkel and a specially weighted mountain bike; and the bog snorkelling triathlon.

All proceeds are donated to local charities.
