Pressing Flowers
Written by Catherine Davis

Pressing flowers is a creative craft that is easy to master.

You can arrange pressed flowers in a picture frame as a memento of a special occasion such as a wedding, christening or Valentine's Day, or use them to make greetings cards or fridge magnets.

Violets, primroses, freesias and jasmine are especially good for pressing, and ivy, acers and ferns work well as foliage, but you needn't be restricted to flowers. You can preserve herbs, grasses, even fruit and vegetables, and let your imagination loose with unconventional textured material such as bark and moss.

The most immediate method for pressing flowers is to sandwich them in absorbent paper and place them inside a book which is then weighted down with something heavy. Otherwise you could buy a purpose made flower press from a local craft shop or if you enjoy a bit of woodworking, construct your own. Unless you buy a microwave flower press, the process usually takes about two weeks.
