Kite Flying
Written by Catherine Davis

Kite flying started around 3,000 years ago, and the first kites were made out of leaves. Today, kite flying remains an eco friendly hobby and the development of hi-tech materials and up to date designs have made it increasingly popular with all ages.

Kites come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from small, simple one liners, through multi line sports, fighter and stunt kites to large power or traction kites which have the strength to pull you along. Similarly, kites are used in a range of activities from aerial photography to exciting new wind powered sports such as kite surfing, skiing and boarding.

If you are new to the hobby, a local kite flying group or specialist shop can give guidance and recommendations on what to buy. Although kite flying is easy, big kites need to be controlled and operated properly. In the interests of safety and enjoyment, you are advised to take a few lessons; your kite trader should be able to help here too.

Kite flying festivals take place all over the world, one of the most popular is the Sunderland International Kite Festival (Washington, Tyne and Wear, England) which attracts over 70,000 people. Such events are a great way to meet other enthusiasts, as well as to watch and take part in displays and competitive kite flying.
