Tae Kwon Do
Written by Catherine Davis

Tae Kwon Do is a Korean martial art that roughly translates as 'the foot and hand way' and involves the use of kicks, punches, blocks and restraints in unarmed combat.

Tae Kwon Do's most distinctive feature is the emphasis put on kicking, the principle being that a kick can deliver a more powerful blow than a punch and from greater range.

While Tae Kwon Do is a popular form of self defence training, it is also enjoyed by all ages as a recreational and competitive sport and as a means to improve general health and fitness.

Tae Kwon Do works all the major muscles in the body. It develops strength, speed, balance, coordination and flexibility and is great for building self confidence and wellbeing.

Physical and mental discipline is central to the practice of Tae Kwon Do. Concentration, stamina and self control are required to master technique and focus one's power, and the positive effects of this exercise can carry over into many areas of life.

Like other martial arts, Tae Kwon Do includes meditation and has a long philosophical and ethical tradition. As well as self discipline, it promotes the qualities of courtesy, respect, perseverance and courage or 'indomitable spirit'.
