Genealogy and Family Tree Research
Written by Catherine Davis

Genealogy and tracing ancestral roots can be an engrossing and enjoyable hobby, and what begins as a plan to find a few relations may develop into a lifelong pursuit.

While genealogy can provide the facts to produce a family tree, you may decide to delve further into family history and put flesh on the bones, so to speak, researching personal biographies and the times and places in which your ancestors lived.

There are plenty of introductory books to help you get started. As a rule, it's easiest to work backwards from the present. Contact as many relatives as you can and collect family documents – birth, marriage and death certificates, letters and photographs – to establish the basic facts.

Genealogical information can come from a variety of sources; on line, in books, on paper, microfilm or microfiche in libraries, records offices and archives.

A genealogical society may be able to give research assistance. Staffed mostly by volunteers, genealogical groups offer a broad range of services and typically produce useful newsletters and journals.
