Conservation Volunteering
Written by Catherine Davis

Conservation volunteering involves practical work to protect the environment and preserve wildlife and habitats. You can volunteer to help with a variety of tasks including tree planting and fence building, and perhaps learn traditional crafts like dry stone walling and hedge laying.

As well as gaining new skills and experience, volunteering to do conservation work offers the chance to make a positive difference to the environment. You'll also meet people who share your interests, and many conservation volunteer groups meet up socially.

Being physically active in the fresh air is a great way to keep fit. It can have benefits for mental health too, helping to reduce stress and overcome depression.

There are lots of opportunities for conservation volunteering, both in the UK and overseas. Contact the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV), for details. You could also get in touch with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), or the National Trust.

For International volunteering, contact Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), or Green Volunteers. Green Volunteers is also an information network with continuous updates on new projects.
