Firstly, you'll reap the benefits of wholesome organic food that is tastier and more nutritious than shop bought. Secondly, growing vegetables is a great way to exercise and keep fit that gets you outdoors. Thirdly, sowing, planting and harvesting is a very satisfying activity and many find that growing vegetables is a therapeutic pastime.

Anyone can grow their own vegetables, no matter the size of their plot or horticultural know how. There are plenty of books, magazines and web sites where you can get advice, information and tips.

You can grow vegetables from seed or buy small plants at a market or garden centre. Among the easiest crops to grow are potatoes, beans, leeks, radishes and courgettes. If you don't have a garden, window boxes, balconies and roof terraces are great for herbs and salads such as rocket, parsley, tomatoes, basil and chives.

If you live in the UK, you could contact your local council to see if there are any vacant allotment plots in your area.
