Backgammon
Written by Catherine Davis

Backgammon is a board game which combines elements of luck and skill. Fluid, fast paced and easy to learn, backgammon is played at both social and competitive levels.

The rules of backgammon are simple. Two players have fifteen checkers each which they move around the board on the roll of a dice. What follows is basically a race as each player tries to bring their own checkers home past their opponent, hitting or blocking the other's pieces along the way. The first to remove all their checkers from the board is the winner.

Although luck plays an important role in backgammon, there is also plenty of scope for strategy. Like chess, backgammon is a game of patterns and vision. With each roll of the dice, the player must choose from numerous options, calculate his own moves and try to anticipate those of his opponent. For an added dimension, a doubling cube (a die numbered 2,4,8,16,32 and 64), is used for raising the stakes at backgammon matches and tournaments.

A popular variant of backgammon is the Chouette, which allows for play by three or more people.
