Animal and Wildlife Volunteering
Written by Catherine Davis

Volunteering to work with animals and wildlife can be very rewarding in its own right and may also help to relieve stress and depression, especially if it involves physical exercise.

Animal welfare and rescue charities offer a wide range of opportunities for volunteers. Depending on your skills and interests, you could walk dogs and do kennel duties, help out at a community farm, horse riding centre or zoo, look after injured animals, monitor local wildlife or take part in specific conservation projects.

More indirectly, it is also possible to sponsor animals and volunteers are also needed as fund raisers, campaigners and administrators.

The RSPCA, RSPB, Blue Cross, Guide Dogs for the Blind Association and the British Horse Society are among the UK organisations that you might contact.

Many international animal and wildlife rescues also have some sort of volunteer project, and overseas work is available in countries including Africa, Asia, South America and Australia, some of which include the protection and conservation of wild animals and rare or endangered species.
