Advice Volunteering
Written by Catherine Davis

Advice volunteering is about providing people with a range of practical advice and emotional support. For the opportunity to do some challenging, varied voluntary work that helps those in need, you could get in touch with the Citizen's Advice Bureau or the Samaritans.  Both charities depend on volunteers and are always keen to recruit new people.  You'll be part of a team and trained as required, so as well as doing a valuable service you'll be learning or developing new skills.

The Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) offers free, independent and confidential advice to help people with problems related to debt, employment, housing, immigration, consumer and other matters.  Volunteers take on a range of roles as advisers, administrators, campaigners and fund raisers.

The Samaritans provide confidential emotional support for those experiencing feelings of distress, despair, anxiety and loneliness, and are available twenty four hours a day to anyone who needs to talk (UK: 08457 90 90 90 for support).  You don't need any formal qualifications or previous experience, but an open mind and the ability to listen without passing judgement is essential.
