|Complementary & Alternative Medicine|
|Written by Catherine Davis|
Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is a term that covers a diverse group of health care systems ranging from acupuncture and chiropractic to homeopathy and shiatsu, many of which have been practised for thousands of years.
What complementary therapies have in common is a holistic approach to healing which sees the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of life as closely interconnected. Complementary medicines aim to promote health and well being by restoring equilibrium between mind and body, addressing the whole person rather than a specific symptom.
Before you start a complementary treatment, make sure you are thoroughly informed about your condition and chosen therapy. Check that your complementary therapist is registered with a statutory body or credible professional organisation. It is also a good idea to consult your doctor, since natural medicines or herbal products can sometimes interact with prescription drugs.
