Volunteering |
Written by Catherine Davis | |
As well as the sense of purpose gained from helping others and contributing to a good cause, volunteering offers the opportunity to meet new people, gain valuable life experience, develop social and employment skills and enhance paid work prospects. Anyone can volunteer. It doesn't matter if you have days or just a few hours to spare. Whatever your age or interests, whether you have professional skills or just amateur enthusiasm, everyone has something to offer and there is plenty to get involved in. Training and support is usually given as required and expenses such as travel costs are normally paid. You may be surprised at the scope and variety of volunteering opportunities and the inspiration that they can bring. Here are just a few suggestions: • Conservation and environmental projects • Helping out in a theatre or community centre • Working with the emergency services • Driving those who can't use public transport • Gardening in a care home • Presenting hospital radio • Helping the lonely, isolated or disadvantaged • Working for an animal charity • Providing advice or counselling • Community projects • Fund raising
